VMA Fashion Face-Off: Chris Brown vs. Drake

Chris Brown and Drake were both among the MTV VMA winners last night. Better yet, no bottles were thrown or blows were exchanged to our knowledge!

Drizzy won Hest Hip-Hop Video for "HYFR," while Breezy took home the prized Best Male Video honors with his self-directed smash hit "Turn Up The Music."

Dude even got a hug and kiss from Rihanna to boot. Point ... Chris?

A question for another time. The question for right now is which of these sharp-dressed music hunks looked the best on the industry's wildest night.

Daniel Craig Reportedly Re-Signs for More Bond Films

Daniel Craig commits to playing James Bond 2 more times after Skyfall

Daniel Craig as a blue steel-eyed James Bond captured the spy?s cold and ruthless manner (as described by creator Ian Fleming) in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. However, absent was the swagger and dry air of sophistication that Craig?s predecessors brought to the role, in varying amounts. The character had become less a suave agent carrying out his orders for queen and country, more a morally-compromised killing machine whose disillusionment recalls Matt Damon as Jason Bourne ? rather than Sean Connery as 007 going back to Dr. No.

It?s for those reasons that Craig?s run as James Bond has been heralded by some, decried by others. Earlier this year, Bond series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson announced their interest in locking Craig down to portray 007 for the next decade (or, rather, five films) following the release of Skyfall this November. That public revelation rallied masses of Craig supporters and detractors alike ? prompting arguments about just what, exactly, makes for a good screen version of the character (and whether or not Craig has it).

That was well before marketing got properly underway for Skyfall, with trailers and behind-the-scenes footage suggesting that director Sam Mendes? promises to deliver a proper Bond movie (as he puts it, ?a big fabulous escapist movie? for the 21st century) are more than just hot air. Craig remains physically-fierce and hardened in the face as ever, but his 007 appears to undergo a humbling metamorphosis in Skyfall, evolving from a glorified thug (armed with a gun and a license to kill) into a classier, but still deadly, government employee.?Hence, the overall reception could be more positive for today?s announcement that Craig has worked out a deal to return as 007 for two additional films after Skyfall.

Daniel Craig as James Bond in the trailer preview for Skyfall

MI6?is confirming the new contract for Craig, but points out there?s a precedent for Bond actors dropping their commitment early ? as happened with both Connery and Timothy Dalton. Moreover,?EON Productions heads are said to have enjoyed the non-aggressive production timeline for the 23rd Bond film, resulting from a prolonged break between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall (as a result of MGM?s financial woes). That could mean the studio will be less inclined to adhere to a rigid two-year break between installments from hereon out ? and, if an extended delay were to occur, it could encourage Craig to walk away prematurely after just one more Bond film.

However, there are currently no signs that EON Productions has plans to do that, seeing how it?s already gone and set screenwriters to begin developing the next two Bond films starring Craig. The actor has let it be known he does not intend to take on another role until after the new year ? and the slow progress on David Fincher?s The Girl Who Played with Fire adaptation (where Craig would reprise his role as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist) ensures the actor won?t have any other priorities demanding his attention in the foreseeable future.

Are you excited to see Craig play James Bond for (at least) two more films?

Skyfall opens in U.S. theaters on November 9th, 2012.

South Africa: Mccarthy Expects Bafana to Restore Pride Against Brazil

Bafana Bafana veteran striker Benni McCarthy believes the international friendly match against Brazil on Friday, 7 September will be an opportunity for selected players to restore the pride of the nation.

McCarthy who was a late replacement for the injured Edward Manqele who had in turn replaced the injured Siyabonga Nomvethe said a good result against five-time FIFA World Cup winners is a tonic for good things to come.

"I am happy to be back in the national team. I missed out on the World Cup and it was a bitter pill to swallow, but it's all behind me now. I have been given a second chance and I hope to make the best of it," he said.

"We are playing probably the best team in the world, so we have to be at our best. The strategy by the new coach has been used effectively at Swallows and hopefully it will work well again."

The striker also believes this match should be a turning point for Bafana Bafana.

"It's a tough challenge but we are confident we can come out victorious because we have a lot of talented players in the team and make the country proud," added McCarthy.

Bafana Bafana had a rigorous training session in the morning and were given an afternoon off. The players seem to have grown in confidence over the last few days and are raring to go.

"Yes, we are aware this will not be an easy match and this should be a good test for all of us. We are working towards the 2013 Afcon tournament and the clash against Brazil will give us an indication of where we are," said Siphiwe Tshabalala.

The midfielder is among the remaining five players of the team that played against Brazil in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup played at the Ellis Park Stadium. South Africa lost the match 1-0.The others who were in that team are Kagisho Dikgacoi, Itumeleng Khune, Bernard Parker and Siboniso Gaxa.

"We have played three times against Brazil and we have learnt a lot from those matches, especially the last one where we lost narrowly through lack of experience. But I have great belief that this time around we will do better, not taking anything away from our opponents who are a formidable team," said Tshabalala.

The squad will have their last training session on Thursday morning (6 September) at the match venue.

Meanwhile Dino Ndlovu has already reported for national team duty and trained with the team in the morning. Bongani Khumalo and Gaxa are expected later in the evening.

Northern California man identified as suspect in CHP shooting on I-680

WALNUT CREEK -- The man who allegedly shot a California Highway Patrol officer while pulled over on Interstate 680 Tuesday morning near Alamo was identified today as Christopher Boone Lacy, 38.

Contra Costa Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said that Lacy, a resident of the small Northern California town of Corning, was shot and killed by a fellow officer when Lacy shot CHP Officer Kenyon Youngstrom in the head after being pulled over for an obstructed license plate.

Youngstrom remained in critical condition Wednesday morning, Lee said. He'd pulled over Lacy Tuesday at about 8:20 a.m. as Lacy drove a Jeep Wrangler southbound on I-680 near the Livorna Road offramp, police said. Moments later, a second CHP officer

who had pulled up behind the jeep shot Lacy in his vehicle and aided the injured officer until emergency medical crews arrived, said Contra Costa sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee.

The second officer had responded to the scene on reports of a dead deer near the road, Lee said. Youngstrom had already stopped Lacy nearby and approached the Jeep. He had a brief conversation with Lacy, then Lacy drew a handgun without warning and shot Youngstrom in the head, Lee said.

Moments later, the second officer approached from the rear passenger side and shot Lacy an unknown number of times, Lee said.

He returned to his car to radio in "officer down" as shocked motorists who witnessed the shooting phoned 911 for a fallen officer, Lee

said.

The officer returned to give first aid to Youngstrom, and several civilians stopped to help as well, Lee said.

Investigators found a handgun, two loaded magazines and a knife in the Jeep, Lee said.

Lacy did not have any outstanding warrants. His last arrest had been for driving under the influence in Marin County in 2006, but he had no other apparent criminal record, Lee said.

Youngstrom, a 37-year-old married father of four, was taken to John Muir Medical Center.

Flowers were placed outside the two-story home of the officer in Cordelia, near Fairfield, as CHP colleagues came by to support the family.

The Oakbrook Elementary School PTA in Cordelia is planning an informal vigil for Youngstrom at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night in Ridgeview Park at 4950 Silver Creek Road in Fairfield.

"The family has asked we respect their privacy and give them time and space to figure out what they're doing, and we're trying to do that," said PTA Vice President Susan Young. "We just want them to know we are sending them our best and want to help in any way we can. He's fighting for his life and we're here to support him."

There are no planned speakers and the vigil is expected to be a brief,

quiet show of support, she said, with a moment of silence and candles lit.

The Youngstrom home in a middle-class commuter neighborhood in Cordelia, located near I-680, set against rolling hills.

The officer's family "asked for everyone's prayers as Officer Youngstrom fights for his life," Paul Fontana, assistant chief of the CHP, said in a brief statement Tuesday night.

Youngstrom graduated from the academy in 2005 and worked mostly in the Martinez regional office, having been assigned to the Contra Costa office immediately after graduation. Before joining the CHP, Youngstrom served in the U.S. Army Reserve, Fontana said.

The investigation shut down the major East Bay artery, snarling traffic on highways and neighborhood streets throughout Central Contra Costa for most of the day.

The shooting was the first serious line-of-duty incident for Bay Area CHP officers since 32-year-old John P. Miller died after slamming into a tree while pursuing a suspected drunken driver in Livermore on Nov. 16, 2007. The last CHP officer shot in the Bay Area was on Jan. 20, 2010, when a robbery suspect wounded the officer at an Oakland Walgreens. The last fatal CHP shooting was Feb. 17, 2006, in Stanislaus County.

Outside John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, dozens of CHP and police officers walked forlornly into the lobby to hold a vigil Tuesday. Youngstrom had a large extended family, the CHP said, and relatives from Southern California arrived at the hospital throughout the day. Through Fontana, the family thanked their extended family and friends, the law enforcement and public safety communities, and the public for their support.

"We are family, and the community is part of that family as well," said an emotional CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott. "This is a situation where we all take an oath not to swerve from the path of duty. As you can imagine, it's difficult.

"You think about how tomorrow it may be my day or anyone else's," she said. " ... That's true every day you send a mother, father, husband or wife out to represent and protect the rest of us. We're grateful for all the support we know we're getting from the communities we serve."

The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Sheriff's office and District Attorney's Office, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in Contra Costa County.

It pays to keep salmon fit: Salmon farmers could save big by exercising their fish more -- without overexerting them

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? Salmon farmers could save huge sums by exercising their fish more. Researchers in Norway have tested various swimming exercise regimes for three years on salmon fry. The findings indicate that proper exercise can improve smolt health enough to significantly reduce losses at sea.

In the final 12 weeks before transferring to sea cages, smolts should be swimming 0.8 to 1.2 body lengths per second.

With proper exercise the smolts develop more numerous, larger heart muscle cells and a stronger immune system. The exercise regime also increases bone formation and vertebral mineralisation in smolt, making them less likely to develop deformities.

Only 80-85 per cent of salmon smolts transferred to sea cages in Norway survive to reach slaughter size. The loss of the remainder costs producers billions of kroner each year. Escapes, disease, and handling-related injuries are the top causes, and scientists attribute a large proportion to poor smolt quality.

Swimming exercise cuts losses

"There are many reasons for poor smolt quality, but most are related to intensive production methods," says Senior Scientist Harald Takle of the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (Nofima AS).

Dr Takle headed a team of Norwegian and international researchers who tested various exercise regimes for three years on salmon fry, from 30-gram parr to 100-gram smolts. Most of the trials were conducted at Nofima's Sunndals?ra Research Station, with complete control of current speed and oxygen saturation and monitoring of feed intake. The findings indicate that proper exercise can improve smolt health enough to significantly reduce losses at sea.

"We have devised what we believe approaches the optimal exercise regime for smolts during their last 12 weeks before being transferred to sea cages," explains Dr Takle. "With this exercise the smolts develop more numerous, larger heart muscle cells and a stronger immune system. For example, the survival rate among properly exercised fish when challenged with the IPN (infectious pancreatic necrosis) virus is up to 15 per cent higher than among inactive salmon."

Healthiest workout for salmon

"In the final 12 weeks before transferring to sea cages, smolts should be swimming 0.8 to 1.2 body lengths per second," recommends Nofima's Harald Takle. (Photo: Torkild Marsdal Hanssen) The exercise regime also increases bone formation and vertebral mineralisation in smolt, making them less likely to develop deformities.

Developing the innate swimming capacity of salmon also benefits their overall health. Good swimmers are more disease-resistant and withstand intensive interval exercise better than poor swimmers, which exhibit stress reactions to the exercise. In the round hatchery tanks, the intensity of the smolts' workout sessions can be regulated by the speed and distribution of the water current.

"Our trials indicate that swimming at least 0.8 body lengths per second strengthens the salmon heart. The optimal exercise intensity for smolts in their final 12 weeks before transfer to the sea cage looks to be roughly 0.8 to 1.2 body lengths per second. Speeds faster than this can have a negative effect," adds Dr Takle," as can major changes in current speed."

Industry players very interested

According to Dr Takle, many hatcheries could implement exercise regimes using a few simple measures. For others, achieving the necessary control of water current in their tanks could prove difficult. He says industry players are showing a great deal of interest in his team's findings and have placed new orders this spring for exercise regimes, which Dr Takle intends to fill.
