Jack Kerouac play to make its world premiere

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jack Kerouac's only full-length play will be staged for the first time this fall.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre and the University of Massachusetts Lowell said Monday ? on what would have been Kerouac's 90th birthday ? that they will produce the three-act play called "Beat Generation" in the novelist's hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts.

The premiere of the play ? a staged reading for eight performances only ? will be the centerpiece of the 2012 Jack Kerouac Literary Festival, which will be held Oct. 10 through Oct. 14.

Kerouac wrote "Beat Generation" ? which draws on his life and those of other Beat writers, including Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg ? in 1957, the same year his classic "On the Road" was released.

He tried to build interest for "Beat Generation" in the theater world, contacting such people as Lillian Hellman and Marlon Brando, but he failed and set the manuscript aside. Kerouac died in 1969. The manuscript was found in a warehouse in 2005.

"This is a moment of literary and theatrical history," said Charles Towers, artistic director of the Merrimack Repertory Theatre, which also produced a stage adaptation of Kerouac's Lowell-set romance, "Maggie Cassidy."

Kerouac's other books include "Doctor Sax," ''The Subterraneans," ''The Dharma Bums" and his final great work, "Big Sur." His first published novel was "The Town and the City."

The author's first actual novel, the 158-page "The Sea is My Brother," was published Monday, in honor of the writer's birthday. The work, written when Kerouac was 21, is the tale of two young men serving on a voyage from Boston to Greenland.

Nardelli resigns from operating roles at Cerberus

(Reuters) - Robert Nardelli, the former head of Chrysler and Home Depot, has stepped down from his operating roles at Cerberus Capital Management LP, the private equity firm said this week.

Cerberus said Nardelli, who served as chief executive of the firm's management consulting affiliate as well as its firearms-making conglomerate, resigned from both posts effective immediately.

Nardelli will continue to serve as senior adviser to Cerberus CEO Steve Feinberg, the firm said.

In a statement, Nardelli said he was stepping away from active management roles at Cerberus to devote his attention to XLR-8 LLC, his investment and consulting company.

Nardelli, a square-jawed General Electric veteran executive who was known as "Little Jack" at the conglomerate for his emulation of mentor Jack Welch, left GE when he was passed over as Welch's successor.

He became CEO of Home Depot in 2000 but left in early 2007 after losing the support of the board. His $210 million severance package from the chain of home improvement superstores made him a lightning rod for criticism.

Several months later, he took the helm at Chrysler, the then deeply troubled automaker owned by Cerberus.

He arrived promising to take a $1 salary and to restore the company's reputation as an American icon.

Eighteen months later, Nardelli stepped down following Chrysler's bankruptcy, the first-ever by a major U.S. automaker.

He returned to Cerberus, where he was eventually named CEO of Cerberus Operations and Advisory Company, a consulting affiliate, and Freedom Group, a gunmaking company in the private-equity firm's portfolio.

Cerberus said Chan Galbato, a long-time Nardelli protege, would succeed him as CEO of Cerberus Operations and Advisory Company LLC, the consulting affiliate.

At Freedom Group, where Nardelli took over as CEO in January, Cerberus said George Kollitides would act as interim CEO of the firearms maker while a permanent successor is found.

FEMA denies aid for towns hit by tornado

Federal officials have ruled that damage from a tornado that ripped through southern Illinois does not rate federal disaster status.

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials on Saturday issued a letter denying Gov.Pat Quinn's request for disaster aid for the five counties hardest hit by the tornado Feb. 29, meaning residents and communities will not be eligible for federal dollars for the costs of repairing the damage.

The news was yet another blow to the region, which had been designated a major disaster area just last year after floods damaged the area. The 170-mph winds of the recent twister damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and killed seven people, said Harrisburg Mayor Eric Gregg.

"We've had floods, tornadoes, now this," Gregg said. "We're holding our own. We will appeal (the FEMA decision), and I hope this is just part of the process. ... I want to know how this decision was reached, and why. Because frankly, I don't understand it."

FEMA officials determined that assistance from state and local agencies, combined with volunteer groups and private insurance, would be enough for the five counties to rebuild on their own, spokesman Mark Peterson said Sunday.

In a statement, Quinn said he would appeal the decision, and Sens. Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin on Sunday issued releases stating the full Illinois congressional delegation would back his request for federal funds.

"I am extremely disappointed that FEMA denied our request for federal assistance that is needed to help people in Harrisburg, Ridgway and the other communities," Quinn said. "After personally surveying the damage and talking to many residents who lost their homes, I firmly believe federal assistance is crucial to help them begin the recovery process."

Gregg estimated the damage to his community at "tens of millions." Four of the five counties for which Quinn has requested aid had been designated disaster areas in June, and FEMA paid out more than $28.5 million in aid for flood victims and community infrastructure, Peterson said.

The new VEVO features a bigger player, continuous playback of videos and personalized playlists synced with user iTunes libraries and Facebook pages.

VEVO, which is co-owned by Sony Music and Universal Music, debuted the new design Friday.

The Facebook integration will likely further stoke rumors that the social network is interested in purchasing VEVO. Michael Cerda, senior vice president of product at VEVO, declined to comment on those reports.

Cerda said the new VEVO was designed to transition the site from a "snackable" website to "a personalized, social and long form experience."

Cerda also said VEVO is planning to do "a lot" to migrate to TV screens, a prospect that will likely further comparisons of VEVO ? in its focus on videos and live performance? to a young MTV. VEVO is currently piped to TVs via Boxee and Google TV, but Cerda said VEVO will soon be connected to "other connected devices" like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation.

In January, VEVO had about 717 million streams, according to ComScore.
