Pre-Life Chemistry Happens At Space Temperatures

60-Second Space

UV light, which radiates from stars and galaxies, can induce rapid changes in icy hydrocarbon molecules cooled to 5 kelvin, as on a comet. John Matson reports.

More 60-Second Space

Icy objects such as comets may have helped start life on Earth by delivering water and carbon-based molecules to the young planet. Because putting something on ice doesn?t necessarily keep it from changing: a new study finds that even in frigid, deep space environments, simple hydrocarbon molecules can react to become more complex ones. The process even works when temperatures drop to near absolute zero.

But just what kind of organic molecules would exist on the icy bodies of a forming solar system? Researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, investigated how organic molecules might evolve toward greater complexity even in the cold of interstellar space.

The scientists found that ultraviolet light, which radiates from stars and galaxies, can induce rapid changes in icy hydrocarbon molecules cooled to 5 kelvin?that?s a frosty minus 451 degrees Fahrenheit.

The chemical reactions resulted in molecules of more complexity?which is the right direction to go if you want to eventually make amino acids and biological molecules. The study appears in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. [Murthy S. Gudipati1 and Rui Yang, In-Situ Probing of Radiation-Induced Processing of Organics in Astrophysical Ice Analogs?Novel Laser Desorption Laser Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopic Studies]

It just goes to show?if you really want to freeze something in place, you?d better encase it in carbonite.

Times flies?. | Peace no matter what. I'm trying?.

Well, no post for a year? Spooky that came back nearly 1 year to the date of the last post. Lots been going on, lots of changes ? well apart from with my website and here! I aim to rectify that. I have?started putting an inspiring quote a day on twitter if you want to follow, and have started writing a book on a mental fitness plan (based on a physical fitness plan idea) so am hoping to post sections as I write and see how they go?.here?s the intro ? totally unedited, which is such a big step for me as usually redo to death hoping to get perfect then give up!!

Mental Fitness Plan ? intro

Emotions are the most important thing and yet we avoid them. We are told about exercising every week, and eating 5 a day but no guidelines are given on how to be mentally healthy. We even go as far a to stigmatise people with ?mental health issues?, even though most people have them to some degree. I want to change that by making mental fitness a thing to be proud of having, a norm.

So what do I mean by mental fitness:
Being calm and assertive no matter what
Being yourself and comfortable in all situations
Feeling alive and passionate about something

Signs it?s not:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Anger
  • Being negative towards yourself, or others
  • Worry what others think
  • Avoiding situations & not following your dreams
  • Not being content for most of the time

We all have bad days and no-one is mentally healthy all the time, just as athletes have off days and injuries, but it is about knowing what healthy is and bouncing back. If you broke your leg you wouldn?t think you had to live with it for the rest of your life ? you?d heal it and expect to get full health back, and yet with emotional issues we stay wounded and let it hold us back in life. Your mind is a muscle just like other muscles, and it can be strengthened with correct use.

So let?s just look at why emotions are so important:

  • We are motivated to be happy and avoid unhappiness
  • Every decision is based on this ? it?s how we know what we want, or don?t want
  • We chase all other external things to get a feeling
  • Feelings can help us do things, or stop us going for what we want (lack of confidence, nerves etc)
  • It?s how we communicate with each other
  • For survival ? both love and fear are essential
  • Intense emotions can change our life

Yet how many of us know what are healthy and normal emotions, and when they are distorted. The difficulty is when we feel strong emotions our thinking can be irrational and we tend to make irrational decisions.

We also spend a lot of time trying to escape them or create them without fully realising that they are actually created by us, inside us. I work a lot with people with addictions who will risk killing themselves just to escape internal pain and feel good. Surely it would be better for us all to learn how to be happy within ourselves so we don?t need to escape from ourselves, but choose external things cos they add to our experience of life?

There is also the problem that instead of being mentally healthy we tend to take our pain out on others and pass it on, eg we are anxious so get defensive and attack others, or judge others so we feel better. If someone has been treated badly in the past they may mistrust others and treat them badly too. It all comes from internal pain. If you are secure and at peace you have no need to try and control others, or let them control you. How nice would it be to be who you want to be, comfortable in all situations without worrying about what others think or whether they will accept you? Bliss. And this mental fitness plan it about aiming for that. Or you can just aim for doing enough to make your life a bit easier. It is no different than physical fitness, you can maintain ?a minimum amount, amending as issues come up, or push yourself to be better and better. Your choice.

The benefits are:

  • Feel better more of the time
  • Be healthier (proven to improve immune system and general health)
  • Be nicer to be around
  • Perform better in all areas
  • Cope better when things go wrong
  • Get the best out of yourself and others
  • Be who you choose to be
  • Get rid of negative habits and behaviours.

Wow -?committed?to it now. Feels good?

Carbonite Mobile backs up the contents of your phone, allows you to remotely wipe your device

Before today, Carbonite had a few mobile apps, but the backup process was something of a one-way street: you could access content on your handset, but you couldn't back up the contents of your phone. That changes today with Carbonite Mobile, a free app for iOS and Android that allows you to upload photos and other files to Carbonite.com. In addition to backup, though, you get some benefits typically reserved for standalone mobile security apps -- things like remote wiping and the ability to reset the phone to factory settings if it falls into the wrong hands. Additionally, you can use the app to locate your lost device on a map, and you can also set off the ringer, even if you had set the phone to vibrate. In the case of the Android app, the software will run in the background; due to Apple's different set of APIs, it won't run 24/7. However, all you iPhone owners out there can program the application so that it backs up the device automatically when you get home. Curious? We've got screenshots below along with download links in Google Play and the App Store.

Iranian hackers target Bank of America, JPMorgan, Citi

(Reuters) - Iranian hackers have repeatedly attacked Bank of America Corp , JPMorgan Chase & Co and Citigroup Inc over the past year, as part of a broad cyber campaign targeting the United States, according to people familiar with the situation.

The attacks, which began in late 2011 and escalated this year, have primarily been "denial of service" campaigns that disrupted the banks' websites and corporate networks by overwhelming them with incoming web traffic, said the sources.

Whether the hackers have been able to inflict more serious damage on computer networks or steal critical data is not yet known. The sources said there was evidence suggesting the hackers targeted the banks in retaliation for their enforcement of Western economic sanctions against Iran.

Iran has beefed up its cyber capabilities after its nuclear program was damaged in 2010 by the Stuxnet virus, widely believed to have been developed by the United States. Tehran has publicly advertised its intentions to build a cyber army and encouraged private citizens to hack against Western countries.

The attacks on the three largest U.S. banks originated in Iran, but it is not clear if they were launched by the state, groups working on behalf of the government, or "patriotic" citizens, according to the sources, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

They said the attacks shed new light on the potential for Iran to lash out at Western nations' information networks.

"Most people didn't take Iran seriously. Now most people are taking them very seriously," said one of the sources, referring to Iran's cyber capabilities.

Iranian officials were not available for comment. Bank of America, JPMorgan and Citigroup declined to comment, as did officials with the Pentagon, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Security Agency and Secret Service.

A U.S. financial services industry group this week warned banks, brokerages and insurers to be on heightened alert for cyber attacks after the websites of Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase's experienced unexplained service disruptions.

NBC reported late on Thursday that the Iranian government was behind these attacks, citing U.S. national security sources. Reuters could not verify that independently.

Tensions between the United States and Iran, which date back to the revolution in 1979 that resulted in the current Islamic republic, have escalated in recent years as Washington led the effort to prevent Tehran from getting a nuclear bomb and imposed tough economic sanctions.

DISRUPTIVE CAMPAIGN

Denial-of-service campaigns are among the oldest types of cyber attacks and do not require highly skilled computer programmers or advanced expertise, compared with sophisticated and destructive weapons like Stuxnet.

But denial-of-service attacks can still be very disruptive: If a bank's website is repeatedly shut down, the attacks can hurt its reputation, affect customer retention and cause revenue losses as customers cannot open accounts or conduct other business.

Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase have consulted the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency on how to strengthen their networks in the face of the Iranian attacks, the sources said. It was not clear whether law enforcement agencies are formally investigating the attacks.

The Iranian attackers may have used denial-of-service to distract the victims from other, more destructive assaults that have yet to be uncovered, the sources said.

Frank Cilluffo, who served as homeland security adviser to U.S. President George W. Bush, told Reuters that he knows of "cyber reconnaissance" missions that have come from Iran but declined to give specifics.

"It is yet to be seen whether they have the wherewithal to cause significant damage," said Cilluffo, who is now director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University.

Security experts said Iran's cyber capabilities are not as sophisticated as those of the China, Russia, the United States or many of its Western allies. Jim Lewis, a former U.S. Foreign Service officer, said Iran has been testing its cyber technology against Israel and other Gulf states in recent years.

"It's like the nuclear program: It isn't particularly sophisticated but it makes progress every year," said Lewis, who is a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic & International Studies.

(AP) ? A judge Thursday refused to order YouTube to take down the film trailer that has inflamed the Muslim world, rejecting a plea from an actress who says she was duped into appearing in the project.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Luis Lavin rejected the request from Cindy Lee Garcia, an actress who appears in the clip, in part because the man behind it was not served with a copy of the lawsuit. Also, Garcia wasn't able to produce any agreement she had with filmmakers, Lavin said.

The judge also cited a federal law that protects third parties from liability for content they handle.

"That leaves really little to support your application," he said to Garcia's lawyer, Cris Armenta.

The judge's ruling means the 14-minute trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," which has been blamed for sparking deadly violence, can continue to be viewed online.

YouTube, which is owned by Internet search giant Google, has blocked users in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Egypt from viewing the clip. It also has blocked the video from being viewed in Indonesia and India because it violates laws in those countries.

It is unclear who uploaded the trailer to the site, and how the judge's decision would be interpreted outside of the U.S. The clip has been linked to protests that have killed at least 30 people in seven countries, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

On Wednesday, Garcia filed a lawsuit for fraud and slander against Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the man behind the video who has gone into hiding since it rose to prominence last week.

YouTube has refused Garcia's requests to remove the film. Her lawsuit contends that keeping it online violates her right of publicity, invades her privacy rights and that post-filming dialogue changes cast her in a false light.

Timothy Alger, the lawyer representing Google at Thursday's hearing, said the Internet company shouldn't be responsible for what transpired between Garcia and the filmmakers. He noted that while the clip has stirred violence, U.S. law doesn't mandate the trailer be removed from YouTube.

"No matter how you view the content ... it is something of widespread debate," Alger said.

Garcia has said she and her family have been threatened and her career damaged since the clip surfaced online.

"Emotionally, I am very disturbed," Garcia said before heading into court Thursday.

"My whole life has been turned upside down in every aspect," she added. "My family has been threatened."

Her lawyer, Armenta, argued in court that her client was used a puppet to make the film, and she was clearly defrauded and lied to by the people behind the film.

"She did not sign on to be a bigot," Armenta said.

Garcia said she was duped by the man behind the clip and that the script she saw referenced neither Muslims nor Prophet Muhammad. She said she was shocked when she finally saw the end result and that her voice had been dubbed.

"I think we need to take it (the film) off because it will continue to cause more problems," she said. "I think it's demoralizing, degrading."

Bayer seeks EU approval for birth control patch

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German drugmaker Bayer requested European approval for a contraceptive skin patch as it seeks to broaden its birth-control business and challenge Johnson & Johnson's Evra patch.

The hormonal contraceptive, to be produced for Bayer by Swiss company Acino, was shown to be effective with a good safety profile in clinical trials involving 4,200 women, Bayer said on Thursday.

It added that detailed results will be presented at the FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Rome in October.

The transparent patch, which Bayer says could generate annual sales of 250-500 million euros ($325-$650 million), is applied once a week either to the abdomen, buttocks or outer upper arm, where it delivers a steady dose of hormones through the skin.

If successful, Bayer's product would offer an alternative to J&J's Ortho Evra birth control patch, which is approved in North America and Europe.

U.S. drug advisers have, however, recommended that the label of Ortho Evra patch be simplified to better explain the risk of blood clots.

A spokeswoman said Bayer was in talks with the Food and Drug Administration over a possible filing also in the U.S.

Bayer, is one of the largest players in the $8 billion global market for hormonal birth-control pills, competing with J&J, Teva's Barr Pharmaceuticals and Ireland-based Warner Chilcott.

Its main oral contraceptive brand Yasmin has also been subject to controversy over health risks. Bayer has agreed to pay a combined $400 million to settle almost one third of about 6,000 legal claims in the U.S. that Yasmin caused blood clots.

Oil's slide continues toward $90 a barrel

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil sagged for a fourth day Thursday as high U.S. inventories and weak economic data from China and Japan reinforced fears of a deeper global downturn.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 51 cents to $91.47 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished at $91.98 on Wednesday, dropping $3.31, or 3.5 percent.

Brent crude traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London fell 54 cents to $107.65 per barrel.

The release of weak Japanese trade data Thursday and figures showing that China's manufacturing was still contracting weighed on sentiment. Signs that the global economy is slowing down tend to push oil prices lower because people and businesses use less energy.

Japan's exports in August totaled 5.05 trillion yen ($64.33 billion), down 5.8 percent from a year earlier. Imports were also down. In China, meanwhile, a preliminary survey by HSBC of Chinese manufacturing activity showed a contraction for September, although at a slower rate than August.

Separately, crude inventories rose three times more than analysts had expected last week. Crude supplies grew by 8.5 million barrels to 367.6 million barrels. That's 8.4 percent higher than at the same time last year, according to the Energy Information Administration's weekly report.

Analysts said the uptick in inventory was tied to the return of production by U.S. Gulf Coast refineries after being shut down by Hurricane Isaac.

"We can safely assume that most of this has been on the back of platforms returning to production ... we are seeing the return of the refineries in the Gulf area too," Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a newsletter.

In other futures trading in New York, wholesale gasoline was 0.1 cent higher at $2.84 per gallon. Heating oil slipped 0.2 cent to $3.042 per gallon. Natural gas fell about 0.1 cent to $2.757 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Hong Kong sees surge of democratic fervor after 'patriotic education' showdown

Hong Kong had the highest turnout in memory for elections yesterday, underscoring its commitment to the 'two systems government' that Beijing agreed to in the 1997 handover.

By Robert Marquand,?Staff writer / September 10, 2012

Residents walk in front of campaign banners from various candidates for the Legislative Council election campaign in Hong Kong Sept. 9. Hong Kong residents voted for a new legislature on Sunday, a day after the territory's Beijing-backed leader backed down on a plan to introduce a compulsory Chinese school curriculum after tens of thousands of people took to the streets.

Hong Kong?s highest election turnout in years yesterday showed a thriving democratic sentiment in a nation that otherwise doesn?t go to the polls.

The heavy turnout hinged on tumult surrounding a ?patriotic? education plan for Hong Kong schools ? seen as a proxy for Beijing propaganda ? and voter desire to weigh in on the future of the pilot program, which was rejected by all but two of hundreds of schools on the island.

Yesterday?s vote showed political sophistication, analysts say, aided largely by youth, in a vote where bread-and-butter issues like housing and pay figured prominently as well.

Young Hong Kongers spurred a political protest ?movement bigger than anything I?ve seen in a long time,? says Michael DeGolyer, who has long studied city politics at Hong Kong Baptist University. ?You had 16-year-olds bringing their parents into politics, not the other way around.?

The patriotic education course was aimed at elementary-level students and got heavy criticism for teaching little or nothing about cataclysmic events like the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, or the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Critics branded it ?brainwashing.??

Hong Kong has long harbored a distrust of mainland Beijing?s heavy-handed efforts to ?make? Hong Kong a ?Chinese? city, even as Hong Kong?s history, civil service, education, and business acumen make it a financial services hub with international characteristics.

After the crippling SARS outbreak in 2003 and efforts by Beijing to institute a ?subversion? law that would throttle free expression, Hong Kong?s civic base has steadily mobilized, despite handicaps in the city governing structure, which favors Beijing.

For weeks ahead of the vote Sunday, ordinary people thronged the eastern business district.

In a rare move, pro-Chinese forces in Hong Kong backed down from plans to make the national education mandatory by 2015. At the 11th?hour on Saturday word came the plan would be voluntary, though many Hong Kongers were suspicious it could reappear later, an old tactic.

In the scale of problems faced by China this fall, though, Hong Kong may not be at the top of the list.

Beijing?s Politburo undergoes a once-in-a-decade leadership change this fall amid recriminations and turmoil over incidents like the disappearance of Bo Xilai. Its stellar growth rate is in some decline. China is also in the middle of tension-building territory disputes in the South China Sea.

Then there is the sense of disquiet and spiritual hunger among the rank and file, according to Gerard Lemos, who has studied ordinary Chinese people in the heartland since 2007. Any kind of unrest, including that in Hong Kong, tends to trouble China?s leaders, who have long said ?stability? is the chief virtue of statecraft.

The patriotic education issue appeared to push voter turnout high enough to give fractious pro-democracy forces enough seats in the legislature (27) to block pro-China forces in coming sessions.

Much credit goes to Hong Kong youth: ?I could not believe the organization, the discipline shown by these kids,? Mr. DeGolyer said by phone. ?They picked up after themselves, articulated what they wanted, and when they didn?t get everything, they didn?t escalate, which has been the problem in the past, but organized a different way forward. It was astonishing.?

He adds: ?If Hong Kong can handle its youth unrest well, then the unrest of youth in China, which we know is growing, may bring the PRC [People's Republic of China] to come here and ask, ?how are you doing this?? ?

Whether or not machines can quickly answer yes-or-no questions could affect everything from national security to the limits of human knowledge

Image: SET DESIGN: KYLE BEAN; PHOTOGRAPHY: RYAN HOPKINSON

In Brief

  • The ?P versus NP? question asks whether tough problems whose solutions can be quickly checked (like a jigsaw puzzle) are, at heart, easily solvable as well.
  • Despite decades of investigation, no one has been able to prove that the two categories are different. If they were not, machines would acquire enormous power.
  • The problem does not just affect code breakers and Web searches. It suggests a fundamental limitation for biological evolution, physical laws and the nature of knowledge.

On a snowy day in Princeton, N.J., in March 1956, a short, owlish-looking man named Kurt G?del wrote his last letter to a dying friend. G?del addressed John von Neumann formally even though the two had known each other for decades as colleagues at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Both men were mathematical geniuses, instrumental in establishing the U.S.'s scientific and military supremacy in the years after World War II. Now, however, von Neumann had cancer, and there was little that even a genius like G?del could do except express a few overoptimistic pleasantries and then change the subject:

Dear Mr. von Neumann:

States that have lost the most jobs to China

?

By Douglas A. McIntyre and Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

Reuters file

A recent report says 2.7 million U.S. jobs were lost to China between 2001 and 2011, and many of those were in the textile industry.

??Debate over how many jobs the United States loses to China has gone on for years. Today, China is one of the two largest manufacturing economies in the world. The other is the United States. Many labor groups and politicians are?trying to tip factory activity back to the U.S. ? a difficult task to accomplish when companies send work to China to bring labor costs down. So, in many cases, China cannot be blamed for the shift in workers.

24/7 Wall St.: America's disappearing jobs

In a recent study, the Economic Policy Institute analyzed American jobs lost to China between 2001 and 2011. During that time, ?the trade deficit with China eliminated or displaced more than 2.7 million U.S. jobs,?over?2.1 million of which were in manufacturing,? according to the report. Based on the study, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 states that experienced the most job loss as a result of the deficit between 2001 and 2011.

Some industries were affected more than others. Between 2001 and 2011, the U.S. trade deficit with China grew $217.5 billion, with U.S. imports of computer and electronic parts, including computer, semiconductors and audio-video equipment, making up 55 percent of the total. Of the 2.1 million manufacturing jobs lost, more than 1 million were?in the computer and electronic products category.

As a result, many of the states that lost the most jobs have congressional districts with high concentrations of technology jobs. According to the report, states like California and Texas have congressional districts with heavy focus on tech. Four of the five congressional districts with the highest proportional decline ? California?s 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th ? are in the tech-heavy San Francisco Bay Area. The other is Texas? 31st district, which forms part of Austin, also home to many of the nation?s largest technology companies.

Districts in some states, including Georgia and Alabama, ?were especially hard-hit by job displacement in a variety of manufacturing industries, including computers and electronic products, textiles and apparel, and furniture,? according to the institute. Out of the country?s 435 congressional districts, Georgia?s 9th District is among the top 25 for job loss. The district includes the city of Dalton, which is home to manufacturers, including many prominent upholstery corporations.

Despite the talk of a manufacturing resurgence, Robert Scott, the author of the?institute's?study, calls this ?hot air.? He notes that 50,000 manufacturing facilities have been closed since 2001 with very few coming back anytime soon. He suggests the only way to get a manufacturing resurgence off the ground is for the federal government to crack down on China?s currency manipulation and to get American companies to truly invest in manufacturing. ?There is a lack of willingness to put that in place,? Scott said. ?Standing by and hoping manufacturing is going to get better isn?t going to work.?

24/7 Wall St. identified the states losing the most jobs to China based on the Economic Policy Institute report, ?The China Toll.??To reflect how much the trade deficit has affected state and local economies, we considered states that lost the most jobs relative to the population. On this basis, small states like New Hampshire and Vermont have been just as hurt when worker migration is compared to total jobs in each state. 24/7 Wall St. also reviewed the level of export activity and job losses in the 50 states and 435 congressional districts relative to the number of people employed by state. The relative growth rate of gross domestic product for each state for 2011 and between 2008 and 2011 is based on data from the?institute's report. The July 2012 unemployment rate by state is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

24/7 Wall St.: America's most hated industries

What emerges from these figures is that the shift of jobs to China does not spare any state based on its unemployment rate or GDP growth. Nor does it spare any single industry or sector, from technology to shoe making. China?s ability to take jobs from the U.S. stretches across nearly every aspect of the American economy.

These are the 10 states losing the most jobs to China.

1. New Hampshire

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.94 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 5.4 percent (seventh lowest)
  • ?GDP growth: 1.5 percent (18th highest)

Growth in New Hampshire exports to China has grown at a whopping rate of 1,032 percent between 2000 and 2011, according to the U.S.-China Business Council. During the same time frame, exports to the rest of the world have grown by just 69 percent. Seems that some companies in New Hampshire have decided that making products in China would be more efficient than exporting ? almost 3 percent of the state?s jobs between 2001 and 2011 have been moved there. Fortunately, New Hampshire?s economy was stronger than most state economies. The unemployment rate of 5.4 percent, the seventh lowest in the United States, was almost three percentage points lower than the national rate. Between 2008 and 2011, GDP has grown by 3.89 percent, which places New Hampshire in the top 10 states in terms of GDP growth.

2. California

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.87 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 10.7 percent (third highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 2 percent (11th highest)

Four of the five congressional districts (of the 435 examined) with the most jobs lost are based in the Bay Area of California, home to many of America?s largest technology corporations. According to the?San Francisco Chronicle, executives of California companies point to ?strict environmental regulations and high taxes and labor costs? as barriers for bringing jobs back to the U.S. This comes at a time when the economy of America?s most populous state is struggling ? the 10.7 percent unemployment rate in California was the third highest in the country in July. Between 2008 and 2011, California?s GDP has declined by $20.75 billion, far larger than any other state.

24/7 Wall St.: American cities adding the most jobs

3. Massachusetts

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.86 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 6.1 percent (12th lowest)
  • ?GDP growth: 2.2 percent (seventh highest)

President Obama and his campaign surrogates have claimed that Mitt Romney was heavily responsible for jobs being shipped overseas while the GOP candidate was governor of Massachusetts between 2003 and 2007. Factcheck.org notes that jobs did in fact go overseas during Romney?s time in office; however, the rate of job loss during that time actually was less compared to the four years before and after he was in office.

Two congressional districts in Massachusetts were in the top 10 in the country for jobs lost. Massachusetts 5th Congressional District shipped 17,200 jobs to China between 2001 and 2011, which amounts to 5.42 percent of the district?s current employment of 317,400. The largest city in the district is Lowell, known for its manufacturing base. Massachusetts 3rd District, which contains the state?s second-largest city of Worcester, has shipped 15,500 jobs overseas, which amounts to 4.8 percent of the current employment of 322,800 in the district.

4. Oregon

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.85 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: ?8.7 percent (13th highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 4.7 percent (second highest)

Oregon?s 1st Congressional District was hit the hardest by jobs moving to China. In 10 years, 21,100 jobs have been sent to China, which is 5.44 percent of the 388,100 people currently employed in the district. The district includes Beaverton, home to Nike Inc.?s?headquarters. Nike has received substantial criticism over its outsourcing to China and its human rights record abroad. The good news for Oregon is that the economy is looking like it is making a turnaround. While the state?s unemployment was higher than the national rate, its GDP growth rate of 4.7 percent in 2011 was the second highest in the country that year. Between 2008 and 2011, GDP grew by 9.43 percent, which was higher than all but two states in the U.S.

5. North Carolina

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.67 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 9.6 percent (fifth highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 1.8 percent (15th highest)

The congressional district hit the hardest in North Carolina was the 4th, where North Carolina?s Research Triangle is located. The Research Triangle has been an East Coast version of Silicon Valley, with many large technology employers having a major presence in the region. Another sizable business where jobs have moved from the United States to China was furniture manufacturing. According to research from Duke University, High Point, N.C., is the ?Furniture Capital of the World,? but has been losing jobs to China since the 1990s.
