Fidel Castro presents 2-volume memoir

HAVANA -- Fidel Castro spent six hours presenting a two-volume memoir to an audience at a Havana convention center, state media said Saturday. It was a rare appearance for the retired and increasingly reclusive former Cuban leader.

Images on state television showed a smiling, animated Castro wearing a dark track suit over a blue plaid button-up shirt.

Audio of him speaking was not broadcast, but Communist Party newspaper Granma said he told attendees Friday that they would hear about "two books that you haven't had any news of."

Granma said the two-tome memoir, "Guerrilla of Time," fills nearly 1,000 pages and covers Castro's life from childhood until December 1958, the eve of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. It is based on interviews with journalist Katiuska Blanco.

South African youth leader to argue against suspension

JOHANNESBURG -- A South African youth leader who has stirred furious debate over race relations and economic policy is guilty of serious discipline violations, but will get a chance to argue against a possibly career-ending suspension from the country's governing party, party officials said Saturday.

The disciplinary committee of the African National Congress had handed Julius Malema a five-year suspension in November, saying that the 30-year-old had sown intolerance and disunity within the party.

An ANC appeals body on Saturday upheld that ruling, but said that Malema should get another hearing on his punishment to make absolutely sure that the highly watched process was seen as fair. A Malema aide indicated later Saturday that he would pursue that opportunity.

Greece: Debt talks must be done by late today

ATHENS, Greece -- Greece's finance minister said negotiations for the bailout deal his country needs to avoid defaulting on its debts must be completed by late today, but that a breakthrough is being held up by demands from debt inspectors for more austerity measures.

Evangelos Venizelos said Saturday the negotiations in Athens with rescue creditors for a new $171 billion bailout deal are at "a very crucial stage."

Earlier, he joined a two-hour conference call with other eurozone finance ministers and resumed talks with debt inspectors from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund -- known as the "troika" -- after a 12-hour meeting with them on Friday.
